Why Mekhi Becton is "Ready to Go" for Week 1 Against the Chiefs

Becton did miss time in training camp with what he called "nagging things," but noted Thursday that all eyes are on Week 1.

"Ready to go," Becton said. "Excited to be back with the guys."

He later added: "I wouldn't say it was frustration, just missing the guys. I'd rather be around my guys than be in the training room. Anyone would rather do that. Just missed being around the guys, building that chemistry. That's what I'm working through right now."

It's clear, even from practice, the impact that Becton has on the group.

Football wise, he brings a physical and menacing presence, and should help elevate the group's overall play in 2025.

But Becton's good-natured and jovial personality has also had a positive effect on the position room, too.

Multiple offensive line teammates said this offseason how much of a spark Becton brings to the group.

Becton on Thursday explained why he brings a fun and engaging attitude with him to the team facility on a daily basis.

"I'm blessed to be in the position I'm in from the place that I'm from. Just taking every day, being happy every day," Becton said. "A lot of people would wish to be in my position, especially from Richmond, Virginia.

"I just know that I'm blessed and can't take anything for granted, so I try to have fun every single day," Becton added. "I don't know if you see me but i high five the guys coming off the field, just do little things to try and up the morale."

The Chargers will surely take Becton's good vibes in 2025 through the usual ups and downs of an NFL season.

But they also expect the 26-year-old to help protect Justin Herbert and open up running lanes for Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton, especially with left tackle Rashawn Slater out for the season.

If Becton can do both, he'll go down as one of the best free agent signings across the entire NFL.

"Just work every day," Roman said. "If he puts the work in ... really dials in, the stratosphere is the limit for Mekhi."
