Buffalo Bills need Tyler Bass insurance? 3 veteran kickers brought in for tryout

The Buffalo Bills are doing their due diligence on kickers ahead of Week 1.

Per the league’s transaction wire, the Bills worked out three kickers on Thursday: Eddy Piñeiro, Zane Gonzalez and Greg Joseph. Considering the experience of all three kickers, Buffalo seems serious about a Plan B behind Tyler Bass.

Bass, 28, missed much of training camp this summer due to pelvic soreness. The injury lingered into the preseason with the kicker sitting out of the first two exhibition games. Buffalo signed Caden Davis to kick in his place during that span, but he was let go ahead of Buffalo’s preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This seemed to signal that Bass’ injury was no longer a concern. In the game against the Buccaneers, Bass connected on 3-of-4 field goals and made two extra points.

Today’s tryouts do not mean that Bass won’t be ready to go in Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, but Buffalo likely wants to have options if Bass’ pelvic soreness lingers into the regular season. As of now, Buffalo’s practice squad is full, but the team could simply release one of the players currently rostered for one of the kickers.

Piñeiro, 29, spent the past three seasons with the Carolina Panthers after stints with the Chicago Bears (2019-2020) and New York Giants (2021). He has connected on 111-of-126 field goal attempts in his career (88.1%). Chris Tabor, the Bills’ special teams coordinator, worked with Piñeiro in Carolina from 2022 to 2023.

Gonzalez, 30, has been in the league since 2017. He’s played for the Cleveland Browns, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders. He’s made 96-of-120 field goal attempts in his career (80%). Gonzalez also spent one season working with Tabor in Cleveland in 2017.

Joseph, 31, has kicked for the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Washington Commanders and New York Jets. The veteran kicker spent time with the latter three teams in 2024, going a perfect 11-of-11 last season. In his career, he’s made 116-of-141 field goal attempts (82.3%).
