Newcastle United director Jamie Reuben has told fans to "rest assured" that the Magpies will end the summer transfer window on a high.

Reuben, who was present in the draw in Monaco as Newcastle landed some plum games in the Champions League, spoke warmly about the hard work of the recruitment team as the club close in on Nick Woltemade.

When asked about transfers the former QPR director said: "They should rest assured we are working hard. We have worked hard all summer to make sure the team is in the best possible condition to compete at the highest level of football.

"That is what we always want.

"We have worked hard and will continue working very hard up until the last second to make sure the team is in tip top shape for the campaign ahead."

Newcastle will square up to Barcelona at home while Benfica, PSV Eindhoven and Athletic Bilbao all head to St James' Park. Trips to Marseille, Paris St-Germain, Union Saint-Gilloise and Bayer Leverkusen also lie in wait.

Reuben, speaking to TNT Sports, said: "Some very big teams, five former champions but we are looking forward to the fixtures ahead.

"It (PSG last time out) was not just one of the club's greatest nights, it was one of my greatest nights ever.

"It was an unbelievable performance, our first home game back in the Champions League for so many years. Let's look forward to a repeat."

The clash with Barca at St James' Park could see Lamine Yamal light up the stage on Tyneside but home form could be key as Newcastle look to get into the latter stages.

Reuben said: "We take it as a compliment the fact that people don't like coming to St James' Park. We have turned it into a fortress in recent years.

"Some great fixtures there and we are looking forward to being in the Champions League, it is always a special atmosphere.

"I hope we will be up for the occasion."

Reflecting on Newcastle's win-less start to the campaign, after a draw with Aston Villa and defeat to Liverpool, Rebuen went on: "We have been really good. I think we deserve more points than we have so far.

"In both games there were good signs of the strength and determination of the team, so I am looking forward to the rest of the campaign."
