Douglas: A big shot of autumn is on the way

I’m starting to agree with a friend who claims that we live in purgatory with fleeting glimpses of both heaven and hell. Our time on this spinning rock both a blessing and a test.

How well did we love? Did we forgive? Hug your kids and grandkids tight. I’m heartsick, too, but the challenge before us isn’t hopeless, and we aren’t helpless.

An upper air disturbance (pocket of unusually chilly air aloft) may spark a passing shower or thundershower Friday, but I still see a miraculously dry sky Saturday into Labor Day with highs near 80 degrees each day. Winds will be relatively light, humidity levels almost reasonable, with dew points near 60. We’ve seen worse Labor Day weekends.

Get some mileage out of your short shorts because a surge of rain arrives late Tuesday into Thursday out ahead of another premature shot of autumn. Daytime highs may not climb out of the 40s across much of Minnesota on Thursday.

P.S. Ernest Hemingway wrote: “The world breaks everyone, and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”
