Man United have been ruled out of the picture to sign this transfer target, according to former chief scout Mick Brown.

Manchester United are still pushing to secure late deals this summer before the transfer window slams shut in just a matter of days.

Their nightmarish Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town sounded a number of alarm bells for the Red Devils, who have had a quieter window compared to how many expected it to unfold.

Back in May, it was reported that United were willing to listen to offers for every single senior player on the the roster but the club are yet to make any cash sales so far. They have also mainly focused on bringing in new forward recruits, with Diego Leon the only non-attacker out of the four they’ve signed at this point.

We can expect to see talks go right down to the wire with United but if they want to get deals over the line, they need to act fast as time is rapidly running out.

Adam Wharton is a player on United’s radar but their former chief scout Mick Brown has completely ruled out a move to Old Trafford this window, especially amid exit links for Marc Guehi and the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.

“Man United won’t be able to afford Adam Wharton. I don’t think Crystal Palace have any intention of letting him go this summer,” Brown told Football Insider. Their priority has always been to keep hold of their best players, but with Guehi maybe going and Eze going to Arsenal, they won’t let any more go. They’ve bolted the door, so to speak, so there’s no way any deal will happen this summer.”

Naturally, Palace aren’t looking to see a major key player exodus in one window but Brown hasn’t ruled out a Wharton exit in the near future.

Adam Wharton future discussed

United aren’t without competition when it comes to their pursuit of Wharton. The 21-year-old has quickly become a key player at Selhurst Park and reports earlier in the window suggested that Palace value him at £100 million at least.

The role of defensive midfielder has skyrocketed in value in recent years, with Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo’s nine-figure moves to Arsenal and Chelsea respectively setting an astonishingly high benchmark.

“With Wharton, though, a lot of the interest is long-term. Man United want him, but I hear Liverpool, Real Madrid and others are also keeping an eye on him and considering making moves at some stage,” Brown continued. “When big clubs like that are being mentioned, they need to be certain of their investment. I think another year at Crystal Palace, playing consistently without any injury issues, is what he needs to get a big move like that. Next summer, we’ll see what happens with him because that’s when I expect Palace will be more willing to listen to offers.”

United may have the door closed on them for this year but they could see it opened again next year when it comes to Wharton. What Crystal Palace can achieve this season will likely also heavily dictate how willing they are to negotiate a sale.
