Rio Ferdinand has wordless response to fan's proposed three-man shortlist to replace Ruben Amorim

Manchester United are just three games into the 2025/26 season, and there is already uncertainty surrounding Ruben Amorim’s future.

After a season to forget last term with Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim hoped results would pick up after welcoming four new signings to the squad during the summer.

Those new signings will take time to settle, but there is no excuse for United being winless after their first three games of the season.

The season started with a defeat against Arsenal and a 1-1 draw with Fulham, before the Red Devils reached a new embarrassing low by losing to Grimsby Town on penalties in the Carabao Cup second round.

Elimination in the Carabao Cup has led to questions being asked of Amorim and whether he is the best fit for the United head coach role.

United have been regularly sacking managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, but it remains to be seen if Amorim will be the next to feel the axe in the Old Trafford dugout.

Rio Ferdinand reacts to shortlist of Ruben Amorim replacements

Ineos have put their faith in Amorim to turn things around over the summer, after spending over £200 million on new players.

Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon all arrived, but there has been little sign that United have improved from last season.

United have started the new season by earning just one point from their opening two matches against Arsenal and Fulham. They will be looking for their first set of three points when they take on Burnley this weekend.

However, there has been chat among United fans on social media about Amorim’s future. Many are still backing the manager and showing their full support, while others have suggested potential replacements for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to consider as co-owner.

One fan shared a shortlist of three managers with Premier League experience — including Eddie Howe, Andoni Iraola and Kieron McKenna – only to spark a response from former United defender Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand replied with a wordless message as he opted for a face with a peeking eye emoji.

This would suggest that Ferdinand is in disbelief that people are quickly changing their opinions of Amorim rather than giving him time to fix the many issues that exist at United.

What has Sir Jim Ratcliffe said about Amorim?

Back in March, Ratcliffe gave Amorim his unwavering support.

Ineos opted for Amorim to replace Erik ten Hag after firing the Dutchman as manager last October, despite awarding him with a new one-year contract extension before the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

Ratcliffe excused Amorim’s bad results last term and blamed it on the squad as well as the fact that he didn’t have a pre-season to implement his preferred tactical system.

“If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest,” Ratcliffe said. “I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. He’s an excellent manager and I think he will be there for a long time.

“You are beginning to see a glimpse of what Ruben can produce. I think you saw a glimpse of it against Arsenal. How many players against Arsenal on the bench did you recognise? How many have ever worn a Manchester United shirt for [the first team]… as there’s no squad left.

“We are down to the last 10 or 11 men in the squad really, of proper first-team players. Ruben is doing a super job.”

Only time will tell if Ratcliffe changes his mind on Amorim.
