Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has shared his take on the club’s chase for Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie.
Winterburn sees a big statement on Arsenal move
Former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has weighed in on the buzz surrounding Piero Hincapie. The defender has been one of the Bundesliga’s most consistent performers, catching the eyes of several top European clubs.
Winterburn sees the Gunners signing Hincapie as a power move. This could be one that says something to rivals and predicts something to fans. He is good at positioning at the back, able to play centre-half or full-back. It seems that Hincapie is a perfect fit for what Mikel Arteta is trying to build.
Interest surrounding Arsenal and Hincapie has an air of urgency about it. Jakub Kiwior appears to be getting closer to Porto, leaving a place for the Leverkusen star. The defender has youth and experience, as he has already played at a high level in Germany and internationally. While talking to the Metro, Winterburn said: “If the talent is there and you’ve got the money, then absolutely do you go and strengthen again.”

Transfer battle brewing in the background
What adds fuel to this story is the wider transfer picture. Chelsea had been keeping tabs on Hincapie but turned their focus elsewhere, leaving Arsenal with a clearer path. That doesn’t mean the deal will be simple though. Leverkusen are in a strong position financially. They won’t let a top asset leave cheaply. A fee in the region of €60m has been floated. The fee is steep but not unrealistic in today’s market.
For the north London side, the move is about staying one step ahead of their competition. Arteta’s squad has improved massively over the past two years. But, the margins at the top of the EPL are thin. Bringing in Hincapie could give Arsenal the defensive depth. That will help them to stay in the title race while also planning for the future.
Author’s Opinion
Winterburn is right. If Arsenal want to show they’re serious about titles, these are the signings they can’t afford to pass on. Hincapie might look pricey now, but the long-term value could make it a great move.
