Jose Mourinho sacked by Fenerbahce after dropping 'huge Man Utd return hint'

Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Fenerbahce.

The 62-year-old's tenure with the Turkish Super Lig club has come to an end just six games into the new season.

However, Fenerbahce failed to qualify for the Champions League group phase after suffering defeat to Benfica on Wednesday night.

A statement on Fenerbahce's X account read: "Our Professional Football team has parted ways with Jose Mourinho, who has been serving as head coach since the 2024-2025 season.

"We thank him for his efforts for our team thus far and wish him success in his future career."

Mourinho was appointed as Fenerbahce boss in May 2024 on a two-year contract at the club. But according to Turkish media outlet Spor Arena, Mourinho's relationship with the club board has been tense during the transfer window.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss gave a damning verdict on the club's transfer strategy ahead of the second leg against Benfica after they beat Feyenoord in the previous round of Champions League qualifiers.

He said: "If the Champions League was vital to my club, something would have been done with the transfer window between Feyenoord and Benfica. I don't think Fenerbahce has a transfer list."
