If there's one thing general manager James Gladstone has shown during his stint with the Jacskonville Jaguars is that he isn't afraid to take a swing. For that reason, nobody batted an eye when the team traded for wide receiver Tim Patrick after announcing the 53-man roster.
Similarly, Jacksonville was expected to take a dive onto the waiver wire to look for any potential orders. But the time came, and the Jags didn't put in any claims. Just recently, James Gladstone explained why they didn't but also made some intriguing comments.
The Jaguars are pleased with the 53-man roster (for the moment)
James Gladstone met with the local media one day after cutdown day and said that he's pleased with how the 53-man roster unfolded.
"I'm sure it would have been fun for our fan base to see some claims come through," Gladstone responded when asked whether the Jags had made any claims on the waiver wire (2:39 mark). "Obviously, a little different than the draft. You don't have the opportunity to move up in the claiming order. But nonetheless, we're really happy with the way that the 53-man roster currently stands."
But later in the exchange with the press corps, Gladstone said that good teams usually change throughout the course of the season, hinting at more moves coming down the stretch.
"Yeah, you know, I think good teams can be built through the course of the offseason, right? I think the great teams continue to evolve throughout the course of a season. So to say whether or not we're at the spot where I think I thought we'd be, I can't point to it right now. What I can say is we won't stop, and stagnation is never going to be something that you see from us. So I look forward to still what lies in front of us and know the job's not even close to done," Gladstone said.
Aside from acquiring Tim Patrick from the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville also traded for defensive tackle Khalen Saunders after Week 2 of the preseason. On the other hand, the team's brass sent offensive tackle Fred Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles after the finale.
This is a long-winded way to say that Gladstone has been very active, and based on his comments, he won't slow down any time soon.
What kind of trade should you expect from the Jaguars?
The Jaguars could trade players such as running back Travis Etienne, safety Darnell Savage, or one of their defensive linemen. They have several in-house replacements at their respective positions ready to step in. On the other hand, Jacksonville could still use reinforcements at other positions.
The Jags appear to be sold on Nick Mullens, but they'd better hope Trevor Lawrence doesn't miss time in 2025. Otherwise, their odds of challenging the Houston Texans for the AFC South title would take a massive hit. Similarly, the team's brass may want to add reinforcements at cornerback and probably receiver
The bottom line is that the Jaguars won't be resting on their laurels, so expect them to keep making further moves in the upcoming weeks and even after the regular season starts.
