'Showdown talks' planned as Amorim faces must-win battle with Burnley

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim will reportedly hold showdown talks with Red Devils chiefs following Saturday's Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford.

The 20-time English champions have shown positive signs in their opening two matches of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign against Arsenal and Fulham, but they have only managed to collect a point.

The Red Devils then suffered a disastrous second-round exit in the EFL Cup to Grimsby Town on Wednesday night, losing on penalties to the League Two side following a 2-2 draw.

Amorim cut an incredibly frustrated figure after the match and appeared to suggest that he was giving serious consideration to walking away from his job following Saturday's game with Burnley.

According to The Mirror, showdown talks will be held between Amorim and the Man United hierarchy following the team's final game ahead of the September international break.

Amorim could leave Man United after Burnley match

The report claims that Man United have no immediate plans to sack Amorim, but there is a general acceptance that results have to improve in order for him to carry on.

The club's former sporting director Dan Ashworth had been in favour of bringing in ex-England head coach Gareth Southgate rather than Amorim, who was the main choice of chief executive Omar Berrada.

Man United are working to sign a new goalkeeper and central midfielder before Monday's transfer deadline, and Amorim's mood will be impacted by what occurs late in the window.

A report has claimed that Amorim is expected to be sacked at some stage in the near future, with Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola lined up as potential replacements for the Portuguese.

Will Amorim change his 3-4-3 formation?

A lot of the criticism of Amorim has surrounded his formation, with the Portuguese making it clear on a number of occasions that he will not move away from his 3-4-3 system.

However, Man United have struggled to adapt to the formation since his arrival last October, with midfield an area of huge concern, while the team continue to look unsure in the wing-back positions.

"I would like to say very smart things and very important things. I have nothing to say. Nothing to say. That is the biggest problem also. To see the same mistakes and nothing to say in this moment. I'm really sorry for our fans. It's too much sometimes," Amorim said after the defeat to Grimsby.

"You cannot change so much. You cannot change everything in one summer. You need to win games. You need to not show this kind of performance. I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change. In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think."

It is highly unlikely that Amorim will move away from his favoured formation, which could be his undoing, especially if the team are unable to overcome Burnley at Old Trafford in gameweek three.
