Jose Mourinho has already dropped a huge hint regarding the possibility of him taking over at West Ham.

Graham Potter’s side have endured a dismal start to the new campaign, and that has put the former Chelsea and Brighton boss under rapidly increasing pressure as fans are understandably frustrated.

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen even showed signs of the troubles behind the scenes after the Carabao Cup defeat to Wolves in midweek, as he tore off the armband after an altercation with a fan.

Things are certainly not right at the London Stadium, and Mourinho could be about to swoop in and save the day.

The Portuguese has been given his marching orders in the aftermath of the Turkish giants’ failrue to qualify for the Champions League on Wednesday night, and he now has his eyes on a move to E20.

Potter’s future appears to be growing graver by the day, and Mourinho could be waiting in the wings to jump at the opportunity to take over, if his previous comments are anything to go by.

The former Chelsea boss revealed in October 2024 that he would be keen to take on a team in the bottom half of the Premier League after his job at Fenerbahce.

“The best thing I have to do, when I leave Fenerbahce, is go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competitions,” Mourinho said, his comments relayed by Match of the Day’s X account.

“So if any club in England from the bottom of the table needs a coach in two years, then I’m ready to go.”

West Ham would be an enticing challenge for Jose Mourinho

Potter’s days are numbered at West Ham, and even in today’s game, there is few bigger statements of intent than appointing Mourinho as your manager.

The 62-year-old’s comments may have been tongue in cheek at the time, but it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see them actually come to fruition over the next two weeks.

A move back to the Premier League to take on a struggling team would hand him a completely different challenge to the roles he has held before, and at this stage of his career, that could provide a significant appeal.

The Hammers fit the bill for his previous claim, given that they have no European football to contend with, and it would go down as an impressive achievement if he could turn them around.

A relationship between Mourinho and David Sullivan would likely be entertaining to say the least, but the club chief would surely have to hand over all control to the Portuguese if a chance to bring him in genuinely arises.
