Man Utd dressing room 'losing confidence' in two players as replacement eyed

Manchester United's morale has hit rock bottom following their humiliating League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, with doubts creeping in over the reliability of their first and second-choice goalkeepers.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the seasoned players in the United squad view the 2-2 draw and subsequent 12-11 penalty shootout loss to Grimsby as their most dismal result yet.

Despite suffering heavy defeats to Liverpool both home and away in the past four years, and enduring seven 4-0 thrashings since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, the players admit that being knocked out by League Two side Grimsby marks a new low point.

Concerns are also mounting over the goalkeeping situation.

Altay Bayindir made a costly mistake in United's opening Premier League defeat to Arsenal, while Andre Onana was at fault for both of Grimsby's goals.

Onana's performance at Blundell Park, his first appearance since the Europa League final, saw him beaten at his near post by Charles Vernam and failing to claim a corner that resulted in a goal by Tyrell Warren.

The 29-year-old managed to save one penalty in the shootout but was unable to stop 11 other spotkicks, despite getting his glove to five of them.

Bayindir, meanwhile, conceded a goal to Arsenal left-back Riccardo Calafiori from a corner and was targeted from set pieces in the 1-1 draw with Fulham a week later.

Tom Heaton, the third-choice goalkeeper, hasn't played since February 2023 but is fully fit.

Onana could find himself warming the bench for the Premier League clash against Burnley, as his status as first-choice keeper is in doubt and his future remains uncertain.

United have been in talks over a potential deal for Royal Antwerp's goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but Onana is adamant about staying at the club.

A perplexed Ruben Amorim was hesitant to discuss Onana's goalkeeping at length. He said: "It's not about Andre. We are here with all due respect.

"I already said that the best team won. But this is a fourth division team. Andre should play just with his feet during this game. It's not that that happened.

"It's not the goalkeeper. It's more than that. He's everybody. Thank you guys."
