Premier League clubs on high alert? Mourinho leaves Fenerbahce, statement released

Jose Mourinho has left his role as Fenerbahce head coach on the back of the Turkish giants missing out on a place in the Champions League.

The Portuguese had been tasked with delivering a first main-stage appearance in European football's premier competition for Fenerbahce for the first time since 2008-09.

However, despite a thrilling comeback win over Feyenoord in the third qualifying round, Fenerbahce bowed out to Benfica by a 1-0 aggregate scoreline in their playoff tie.

Rather than spearhead their upcoming Europa League campaign and again attempt to dethrone Galatasaray in Super Lig, the decision has been made for the 62-year-old to depart the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

A brief statement read: "Our Professional Football First Team's technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us.

"We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career."

Premier League clubs on high alert?

Mourinho leaves Fenerbahce with a record of 37 wins, 14 draws and 11 defeats from his 62 matches in what was his 11th managerial role of his career.

All eyes will now turn to where the legendary manager will end up next, speculation over a fifth job in the Premier League an inevitability.

He was recently linked with Nottingham Forest as the East Midlands outfit consider whether to part ways with Nuno Espirito Santo after a public breakdown of his relationship with the club's owners.

West Ham United will become an obvious option should Graham Potter not instigate a turnaround in fortunes at the London Stadium.

As well as the size of the club potentially proving attractive to Mourinho, he has property in London and may jump at the chance of that familiarity.

There are no other obvious opportunities at this point unless Manchester United - one of Mourinho's former clubs - decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim and engineer what would be one of the most jaw-dropping appointments in recent years.

For the time being, Mourinho will likely bide his time, a manager who has 1,195 matches and 26 pieces of silverware to his name also a high-profile option for nations who may require a new coach for the 2026 World Cup.
