RB Leipzig make contact for Harvey Elliott transfer

RB Leipzig have made direct contact with Liverpool for Harvey Elliott as they seek to land a replacement after agreeing to sell Xavi Simons to another Premier League club.

Simons is to join Tottenham after Thomas Frank’s side agreed a deal worth £51.8 million for the Leipzig attacker, with his medical completed on Thursday.

The German side have, therefore, taken their long-standing interest in Elliott to the next step by making direct contact with Liverpool, as per the *Times*‘ Paul Joyce.

Leipzig had approached the club to learn the conditions of a deal at the beginning of August, with the 22-year-old now their focus after agreeing to the terms of Simons’ exit.

There have been no bids for Elliott as of yet, prompting the Mail‘s Lewis Steele to claim on Thursday that the No. 19 was more likely to stay at Anfield than leave this summer.

Liverpool value Elliott at £40 million with a buy-back clause or £50 million without, which has seemingly put off potential suitors.

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Liverpool are “unlikely” to sanction an exit for Elliott unless Alexander Isak joins, or the fee is too good to turn down.

There is a growing desire to see Elliott remain at Anfield this season as Liverpool have not shown an indication that they will directly replace him, with Isak to fill other gaps in the squad.

The strength of Liverpool’s bench to start the season has been a growing talking point, even with two match-winners from beyond the XI, and losing Elliott would leave them short if not replaced.

Arne Slot can still utilise his versatility across all competitions, and he is a valuable homegrown player. Liverpool and Leipzig have until 7pm on Monday to reach a decision.
