Eagles general manager Howie Roseman should call Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones every day to thank him for his mistake.
Jones inexplicably traded superstar edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers Thursday for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark. It comes at a bad time of the year too. The trade could make his players distracted and dejected going into their Week 1 matchup against the Eagles next Thursday — a recipe for a blowout loss.
Roseman must be thrilled and shocked that Dallas rid themselves of a generational talent. The Eagles would never do that under his leadership. He always pays his best players early into their careers to reward them and save money. And when it comes time to reset the market, he will do it.
Jones’ approach to contract extensions is to wait until the very last minute and make lowball offers. He was unwilling to make Parsons the highest-paid non-QB in the NFL, causing a rift between the two.
Without Parsons, Dallas could fall to the bottom of the NFC East. It’s one less team the Eagles have to worry about competing with over the next few years. There aren’t many teams who can compete with them.
The Eagles could dominate their division and the NFC as a whole for the foreseeable future.
“NFL is a ‘copy cat’ league they say,” former Eagles vice president of football administration Jake Rosenberg said on X. “…Yet the NFC East watches the Eagles and…1. Dallas trades their best player after antagonizing him and his agent. 2. NYG still over the cap with a bad roster. 3. WAS is oldest team in league and chose to make best non-QB hold out.”
During these moments, Eagles fans should be grateful that Roseman is arguably the best GM in the NFL. If the Eagles had Parsons on their roster, he would have been signed to an extension two years ago. The Cowboys waited too long to negotiate and paid the price.
Roseman won’t make the same mistake with All-Pro defensive tackle Jalen Carter next offseason. With two years left on his rookie deal, Carter is going to become the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL.
It’s easy to poke fun at the Cowboys, but they wouldn’t have been a contender with Parsons anyways. Now here comes the bad news: Parsons could help Green Bay rise to the top of the NFC and knock off the Eagles.
That wouldn’t be a laughing matter.
