Chelsea academy graduate 'on brink' of £2m transfer to Championship club

Chelsea have reportedly agreed to sell Alfie Gilchrist to West Bromwich Albion in what will represent a further financial boost for the Premier League giants.

Although Chelsea have recouped well in excess of £250m this summer, they have shelled out significant fees on a wide array of players when they need to comply with UEFA regulations over spending.

Cashing in on the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson is the priority as they bid to sign Fermin Lopez and Alejandro Garnacho from Barcelona and Manchester United respectively.

However, Chelsea's owners have never been shy of cashing in on homegrown talent, particularly when they have less than 12 months remaining on their contracts.

As per sports broadcaster Ben Jacobs, who was commenting on X, West Brom will be paying £2m plus add-ons for Gilchrist.

West Brom to get Gilchrist deal over the line

The 21-year-old is due to undergo a medical with the Championship outfit on Friday ahead of being available for their fixtures from next month onwards.

Gilchrist will not be in a position to come into contention for Saturday's showdown with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.

West Bromwich Albion head coach Ryan Mason in August 2025.

He is no stranger to football in English football's second tier having made 30 appearances for Sheffield United in 2024-25 before injury kept him sidelined for the majority of the games played in the second half of the campaign.

Prior to that, 17 outings were made for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino, Gilchrist accumulating 431 minutes of senior football for his boyhood club before he was left out of Enzo Maresca's plans.

With Chelsea having since progressed under the Italian and already having Reece James, Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong as options at right-back, a summer exit from Stamford Bridge was inevitable with West Brom beating a number of Championship clubs to his signature.

Will Gilchrist become first choice at West Brom?

Ryan Mason has delivered seven points from his first three Championship games as Baggies boss with just three goals being conceded.

Darnell Furlong has started all three fixtures, but the long-serving right-back joined Ipswich Town on Thursday.

As such, Gilchrist will be viewed as a straight replacement and will realistically be viewed as first choice by Mason.
