Anfield is next on our agenda this weekend as we head to Merseyside to tackle Liverpool, and one thing is almost certain - goals galore.
That’s because fixtures between ourselves and the Reds have amassed 198 in the 66 previous encounters in the Premier League - an average of exactly three a game. Only encounters between Liverpool and Tottenham (206) have seen more strikes hit the back of the net.

There have been so many classic games between Sunday’s opponents - none more iconic than our 1988/89 title decider that saw us triumph 2-0 at Liverpool’s home. But since the Premier League was introduced three years later, there have also been plenty of unforgettable moments including Thierry Henry’s scintillating display against the Reds during our Invincibles season of 2003/04 when he netted a hat-trick to keep our title bid intact.
Indeed, this is also the fixture that has seen the most hat-tricks netted in the division’s history. Six matchballs have been taken home after our encounters with the Reds, with the other Gunner to do so being Andrey Arshavin, who bagged all four in a 4-4 draw at Anfield in April 2009.
Unsurprisingly, that clash is the highest-scoring game between the sides in the Premier League era, while four is the most we’ve scored against Liverpool during that time. Other than the previously mentioned games, we also bagged a quartet in April 2015 when we won 4-1 with Hector Bellerin, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud all on target.
That clash is one of two times we have recorded a three-goal winning margin over the Reds, which represents our biggest victories against them. We were also 3-0 victors back in November 2006 when Mathieu Flamini, Kolo Toure and William Gallas hit the back of the net.
Toure is one of four players who have represented both teams in games between us and the Reds, three of whom got themselves on the scoresheet in those fixtures.
As well as the Ivorian defender, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also scored against his future employers, while Yossi Benayoun scored a brace for Liverpool against us in the famous 4-4 draw before moving to north London. Nicolas Anelka is the only player to have represented both teams in these games but not scored in any.
Our top scorer in clashes against Liverpool is Henry with eight, while Arshavin’s four-goal haul sees him take second spot with a total of five. However Roberto Firmino leads the way in this fixture with 11, with current Red Mohamed Salah just one behind on 10.

The earliest goal was scored by Martin Skrtel after 51 seconds in 2014, while Gabriel Martinelli bagged our quickest back in 2022 on 58 seconds.
The two latest strikes in these fixtures both came in a crazy encounter in 2010/11 when Robin van Persie scored a penalty in the 98th minute to put us 1-0 ahead, only for the Reds to be awarded a spot-kick of their own with Dirk Kuyt equalising after 101 minutes and 48 seconds.
However, Van Persie had the last laugh in March 2012 when he scored in the 92nd minute to clinch a 2-1 win, which was the last injury-time winner in this fixture.
That was just another dramatic twist in this magnificent rivalry, which we hope to write another successful chapter in this weekend as we look to extend our six-game unbeaten run against the Reds.
