New deal - Liverpool now in "direct contact" over major late summer deal

The amount of time left in the transfer window can now be measured in hours with Deadline Day set to bring summer spending to a halt at 7pm (BST) on Monday.

Liverpool still have a lot left to do despite their aggressive opening to the window, including wrapping up deals to sign Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi.

Signing the pair will set Liverpool back around £160m – so it’s easy to understand why they would entertain the sale of a player like Harvey Elliott.

The likes of Tyler Dibling have been moved on this summer for around £40m. It stands to reason Liverpool will believe they can ask for more.

That said, would it be a mistake to sell? Let’s have a look at the report and dive a bit deeper.

RB Leipzig have already made direct contact with Liverpool over signing Harvey Elliott

According to the Times Paul Joyce, RB Leipzig have made “direct contact with Liverpool” to sign Harvey Elliott but this feels like a risky move from the Reds.

Joyce writes on X: “RB Leipzig have made direct contact with Liverpool over Harvey Elliott as they line up a replacement for Xavi Simons.

“Simons is poised to join Tottenham Hotspur with Elliott now interesting the Bundesliga side. No bid has been submitted as yet.

“Kostas Tsimikas is closing in on a loan move to AS Roma.”

Liverpool could be making a severe mistake selling Elliott

Liverpool needed to sell Darwin Nunez but I was disappointed to see Luis Diaz sold, however, it did make financial sense.

Selling Harvey Elliott – with the way that Liverpool’s lack of depth has been exposed this season – would be a severe mistake even if they get their way and sign Alexander Isak for around £130m.

Liverpool need someone like Elliott in the squad and if he is sold, they need to replace him.

Unfortunately, seeing Florian Wirtz in Liverpool Red has ruined me for Harvey Elliott. The 22-year-old Englishman just isn’t nearly as mobile or decisive as Wirtz.

That said, keeping him for one more year would be ideal for Liverpool.
