Newcastle United have four potential absences for Saturday’s massive Premier League clash with Leeds United.
It’s been a tough start to the season for Newcastle United, who didn’t enjoy the best summer of preparation due to their struggles off the field.
The transfer window has caused little but headaches after Eddie Howe missed out on several top targets and Alexander Isak removed himself from first-team training amid serious interest from Liverpool.
However, there is finally some good news on the horizon as Newcastle are closing in on signing Nick Woltemade in a record transfer.
It doesn’t appear that Woltemade will be signed in time to play against Leeds United, though, and Newcastle could be without up to four players due to injuries, suspension and a strike.
Here’s the latest injury news from the Newcastle squad.
Joelinton – Groin

All-action midfielder Joelinton was forced to limp off the field in the 76th minute in Monday’s defeat to Liverpool, after suffering what appeared to be a nasty-looking groin strain.
Thankfully, Joelinton won’t be sidelined as long as initially feared, but he will miss the trip to Leeds.

What Howe said: “Relatively good news on both players [Tonali and Joelinton], when they left the pitch, we feared they may be out long-term. Joey’s scan was good, but he will miss this weekend. We’ll hopefully get him back for the game after the international break.”
Potential return date: September 13 vs Wolves
Fabian Schar – Concussion

Fabian Schar was the third player Newcastle lost to injury against Liverpool, with the veteran centre-back suffering a concussion.
Schar was attacking a cross in the opposition box when he suffered a blow to the head and had to leave the field but, after the scare, he is available to play at Elland Road.
What Howe said: “Fabian Schar is available. We followed concussion protocols, he will be fine to play.”
Potential return date: August 30 vs Leeds United
Sandro Tonali – Shoulder

In a game of injury woe for Newcastle, Sandro Tonali’s injury appeared to be the worst.
The midfield maestro was basically holding his arm as if it was in a sling after dislocating his shoulder and popping it back in.
However, Tonali has also escaped long-term damage and is in contention to remain in the starting XI.
What Howe said: “Sandro’s injury isn’t serious, he is battling to be fit for tomorrow.”
Potential return date: August 30 vs Leeds
Anthony Gordon – Suspension

Newcastle didn’t only lose players to injury against Liverpool, but to a red card as well.
Anthony Gordon was dismissed for a terrible challenge along the calf of Virgil van Dijk and, as it transpires, will now miss more games than the injured trio.
The winger will now be suspended for three games. With Woltemade not signing in time, Will Osula may get a chance to start against Leeds.
Return date: September 28 vs Arsenal
Alexander Isak – Refusing to play

Newcastle will continue to be without Isak as he refuses to play for the club again amid his desire to join Liverpool.
What Howe said: “It’s for other people to decide. I’m not in control of those discussions or decisions.”
