Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthäus believs VfB Stuttgart have got thmselves a great deal, given the amount Newcastle United are paying for Nick Woltemade.
Matthäus is quoted by BILD as saying: “It’s a great deal, compliments to VFB for staying tough for so long. The Premier League can pay prices that Stuttgart can no longer refuse. I think they didn’t want to say no anymore either. The issue caused unrest in the club and the team.”
VFB Stuttgart are said to have accepted an €85 million package from Newcastle United for Nick Woltemade. Some reports in Germany have claimed it could reach €90m, whilst in the UK a lower transfer fee has been reported.
The discrepency could be related to who is paying commission and solidarity payments, and how that is counted.
It was considered a priority for Newcastle United to buy a striker, since the relationship between Alexander Isak and the club looks like it may be beyond fixing.
Woltemade was close to joining Matthäus’ former club Bayern Munich, that collapsed on Sunday as VFB Stuttgart chairman Alexander Wehrle told BILD: “The file is closed, and it will stay closed. Nothing can happen now.”
The 23-year-old was the top scorer at the U21 European Championship in the summer as Germany came up short in the final against England
Woltemade made 33 appearances for VFB Stuttgart last season, scoring 17 teams and assisting on three occasions.
