The Athletic: Man Utd eyeing move to sign 'absolute monster' midfielder, could replace Mainoo

Manchester United are admirers of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Morten Hjulmand, according to The Athletic.

The Old Trafford side have reportedly identified the Danish international as a potential alternative to Carlos Baleba but have yet to start any concrete talks, with four days left in the summer transfer window.

United stepped back from their pursuit of Baleba earlier this month, with Brighton reluctant to sell the 21-year-old midfielder and demanding a fee in the region of £120m, as GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano previously reported.

The Red Devils have been on the lookout for an alternative since, with both Hjulmand and Crystal Palace starlet Adam Wharton earmarked as potential late solutions.

Hjulmand’s departure from Sporting in the final few days of the summer transfer window remains difficult, with Romano revealing the Portuguese club are unwilling to sell any more of their top players this summer following Viktor Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal.

Man United boss Ruben Amorim knows Hjulmand well, having signed him for Sporting two summers ago from Serie A side Lecce and fielded him 65 times during their time together at the Lisbon club.

The 26-year-old midfielder was instrumental in Sporting’s title-winning campaigns over the past two seasons, making 58 league appearances, scoring six goals and providing four assists.

Hjulmand was made Sporting captain last summer following Sebastian Coates’ departure and kept the armband ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, where he has so far played every single minute in the first four games.

The Denmark international, praised as an ‘absolute monster’ by journalist Zach Lowy, is under contract at Sporting until the summer of 2028.

Man United are anticipating a busy end to summer business, with Alejandro Garnacho now close to completing a £40m switch to Chelsea, and Rasmus Hojlund expected to join Serie A champions Napoli on a season-long loan.

The Red Devils have also been rocked by Kobbie Mainoo's demand for first-team football, with the England international requesting a loan move before the deadline after being benched for their first two Premier League fixtures.
