Trent Alexander-Arnold has been dropped by England coach Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
The defender, who was not an automatic selection during Gareth Southgate's tenure, was omitted from the 24-man group named on Friday, despite a high-profile summer that saw him join Real Madrid.
The ex-Liverpool man, who has only played 26 minutes for England since Tuchel's appointment, was left out in place of Reece James and Djed Spence, with the latter earning his first-ever England call-up.
A reason for Alexander-Arnold's omission was not provided, but Tuchel is likely to provide an update when he hosts a press conference.
In other news, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson received his first England call up, while John Stones, Marcus Rashford and Adam Wharton have been recalled in an England squad that features no Liverpool players.
That means Curtis Jones has been overlooked despite playing in all four of Tuchel's first four England matches.
Liverpool could have a representative by the time England plays Andorra next Saturday, with Marc Guehi, who might still sign for the Premier League champions before transfer deadline day, named in the Three Lions' squad.
As for Alexander-Arnold, it continues a nightmare week for the 26-year-old, who was also dropped by Xabi Alonso for last Sunday's trip to Real Oviedo.
Dani Carvajal started in his place, and Alonso said the experienced Spaniard will be a regular feature of the Real team this season despite Alexander-Arnold's high-profile arrival this summer.
"I have many positions double-covered," said the ex-Liverpool midfielder.
"This is one of those, with two exceptional players. Carva, who's been training hard and is much closer to his original level by now, and Trent, from Liverpool.
"That's amazing for improving the level of the squad. We're going to be playing tons of games, and we need to have that top level."
Alexander-Arnold is also set to return to Anfield in a few weeks' time, with Thursday's Champions League draw confirming the 15-time European champions will travel to Liverpool.
