Fabrizio Romano: Second striker now 'pushing' to join Newcastle after Woltemade

Newcastle United are continuing to hold talks over whether it would be possible to recruit Yoane Wissa as the Brentford star is still desperate to complete a switch to St James' Park before the summer transfer window slams shut, GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano has revealed in his latest newsletter.

The Magpies are on the cusp of completing the club-record acquisition of Nick Woltemade after a £69million agreement was reached with Bundesliga giants Stuttgart on Thursday, but head coach Eddie Howe is in the market for a second striker as Monday's 7pm deadline edges closer.

Wissa is agitating to join Newcastle in the coming days, according to Romano, and influential figures on Tyneside have been locked in discussions with Premier League counterparts Brentford in an attempt to get the deal over the line. In a newsletter sent to GMS subscribers this morning, the Italian journalist said:

"They want one more [striker after Woltemade]. Talks are ongoing for Wissa. He is pushing, but nothing is done yet."

Newcastle have been left frustrated in their attempts to secure Wissa's services as Brentford have rejected bids worth up £40million, with the west Londoners being eager to hold onto him unless their lucrative demands are met, but Howe has continued having an interest ahead of the fast-approaching deadline.

The centre forward, who has been described as 'extraordinary', has no desire to stay at the Gtech Community Stadium and is determined to take advantage of the opportunity to test himself in the Champions League with the Magpies after they have been eager to find a compromise to tie up the deal.

But Brentford increased their valuation of Wissa to £60million earlier this month, which has been complicating matters for Newcastle and additional admirers, and it has resulted in him having an uncertain future just a matter of days before the summer transfer window officially closes.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international has been so keen to embark on a fresh challenge with the Magpies that he has threatened to never play or train for his current employers again, but he has still been deprived of a move to Tyneside as boss Keith Andrews continues making his mark in the capital.
