Didi Hamman has expressed his surprise at Newcastle United paying €90m to sign Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart, questioning such a transfer fee.
[Sky Germany cover comments](https://sport.sky.de/fussball/artikel/didi-hamann-ueber-bevorstehenden-wechsel-von-nick-woltemade-zu-newcastle-united/13420354/34423) from the former Newcastle midfielder today about the big move, which has caught most by surprise.
Newcastle made their move for the highly rated Germany striker yesterday in a deal done quietly behind the scenes.
Woltemade has been heavily linked with a move away from Germany all summer but appeared destined to move to Bayern Munich, who were keen to have him as an understudy to Harry Kane.
Instead, it appears he is destined for Newcastle, potentially as a replacement for Alexander Isak, who remains determined to force through a move to Liverpool before the end of the transfer window.
They’ve moved quickly to wrap up a deal for Woltemade and agreed a deal that will see them pay as much as €90m, €85m fixed plus €5m through bonus payments, breaking their own transfer record. That, incidentally, was the €70m that they paid to sign Isak from Real Sociedad in 2022.
Hamann isn’t convinced at that price, believing that even €60m would have been too much as far as he’s concerned.
“Nick Woltemade is a good player, but €60m was already too much for me,” he said.
“Now they’re paying €90m. The prices are very inflated, which is certainly also due to the fact that Liverpool want Alexander Isak – and will probably get him.
“The German clubs would be well advised not to go along with this madness, because this transfer fee is completely unfounded.”
