Ruben Amorim verdict from Sir Jim Ratcliffe already clear as pressure mounts at Man Utd

Reflecting on their cup elimination, Amorim said: "Let's focus on the next game and then we have time to think about things. We have a lot of debts with our fans, so let's focus on the game." He added: "We have a job to do, a job to prepare and then we'll stop and think things through."

Supporters may wonder whether Burnley's visit represents a pivotal moment for Amorim, though he might yet lean on his established rapport with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The United chief heaped praise on the head coach just months ago, and it's reasonable to assume this remains his position today.

Speaking to the BBC in March, Ratcliffe said: "I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. I think he is an excellent manager and I think he'll be there for a long time."

United have cycled through numerous managers since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013, prompting many to believe the club should persevere with Amorim in hopes he can orchestrate a turnaround. Almost every United supporter previously agreed that he required a complete pre-season and summer transfer window before any meaningful assessment could be made.

Yet, merely three matches into the campaign, doubts are emerging about the Portuguese tactician following Wednesday evening's shocking defeat in the Carabao Cup.

It appears unlikely that United will dismiss Amorim at this juncture, though past dismissals have demonstrated that nothing is beyond the realm of possibility in Manchester. But United appear to be desperate for stability following countless years of upheaval.

Amorim was considered among Europe's most promising prospects last year and became United's preferred candidate to replace Erik ten Hag last November, indicating he maintains the support of the club's hierarchy.

Speaking in the same interview he conducted earlier this year, Ratcliffe added: "I think if you look at the squad he has got at his disposal, with the injury list he has got at his disposal, and he comes in mid-season where he has had no time to train the players in his style of play, I think he has done really well. I think you are beginning to see a glimpse of what Ruben can produce."

To Amorim's credit, United have displayed glimpses of their capabilities under his leadership. However, with merely four wins from their last 17 fixtures stretching back to the summer break, the escalating expectations are becoming increasingly difficult for him to manage.
