Welcome to N17

Spurs start their third Premier League game of the season with a home meeting against Bournemouth. Two years ago we met "The Cherries" at the same stage, but we travelled to The Vitality Stadium. We won 2-0, but our goalscorers on that day will be absent tomorrow. They were James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, who are both injured. At the time of writing, it remains to be seen whether Spurs can sign a much-needed quality playmaker.

Two years ago, with "Big Ange" Postecoglou at the helm, Spurs drew their first game (at Thomas Frank's Brentford), then beat Erik Ten Hag's Manchester United 2-0 when Pape Matar Sarr scored his first Spurs goal. Sarr has had a great pre-season and has also excelled in Frank's first three competitive games. Sarr will celebrate his 23rd birthday on 14th September.

Frank is not the first Spurs coach in recent years to have a great start. Two years ago, Robbie Williams was signing "I'm loving Big Ange instead", and Ange won the Premier League manager of the month for a record breaking first three months.

Four years ago, Nuno Espirito Santo won his first three Premier League games as Spurs head coach and also won the manager of the month award. Thomas Frank is exciting us all, but he knows that great reputations are based upon consistency and not bright starts alone.

Tomorrow's opponents will offer a strong challenge despite having lost three quarters of last season's first choice defence. 20-year-old Dutch-born Spanish international centre-back Dean Huijsen was snapped up by Real Madrid for his £50 million release clause in time to play in the Club World Cup tournament. Huijsen has played 90 minutes of Real's first two league fixtures. Huijsen scored Bournemouth's winning goal when we played there last December.

Bournemouth also lost left back Milos Kerkez to Liverpool for £40 million, and their other ace centre-back Illya Zabarnyi to PSG for another big fee. They've spent £34.5 million of that money on centre-back Bafode Diakite from Lille, and he's played 90 minutes of their first two league games.

Perhaps surprisingly, "The Cherries" sold attacking midfielder Dango Ouattara to Brentford (also for big money) two weeks ago. Ouattara scored Bournemouth's late winner against us at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a 3-2 win in April 2023. That remains Bournemouth's one success at Tottenham in 8 Premier League visits to date. Let's hope it stays that way.

Under 43-year-old Andoni Iraola's guidance, Bournemouth have become a match for any side. In their opening game at Anfield, Liverpool were given a nasty scare by Ghanaian Antoine Semenyo, who scored two goals to level the scores before Chiesa and Salah scored late goals. One of Semenyo's goals came after a lung-bursting run from his own half. He scored 11 league goals last season and Spurs are said to be interested in Mohammed Kudus's fellow countryman.

Right back Adam Smith is a former Spurs junior who signed for Bournemouth 11 1/2 years ago. Adam made just two Spurs appearances. He was a late substitute in a May 2012 league win against Fulham and played 90 minutes in a 3-0 League Cup win at Carlisle in September that year. Adam has now made 368 league appearances as a Bournemouth player. He spent virtually a full season there on loan in 2010/11.

Bournemouth achieved something last season that Spurs have not managed since the 1992-93 season - a league double over Arsenal. "The Cherries" won 2-0 at home in October 2024 and 2-1 away in May 2025. In May, Arsenal were preparing for a crucial Champions League second leg against PSG, but still fielded their strongest available side.

Bournemouth lost their midweek Carabao Cup match to Brentford. We've been drawn at home to Doncaster in the third round, and now know our Champions League opponents, if not the dates. Our draw in the Champions League looks favourable, and with the (yet to be announced) signing of former PSG player Xavi Simons from Leipzig, the spirit in the Spurs camp should be good.

I imagine Spurs will be unchanged after last week's fantastic away win against Manchester City. Let's cheer them on to a third win and hope for an injury free International break! I predict a 2-1 home win, but hope for more.

Simon Hooper is refereeing Spurs for the 12th time. Last Monday he took charge of the feisty Newcastle v Liverpool game when he sent off Anthony Gordon for that raking tackle on Virgil van Dijk. Mr Hooper also issued 5 yellow cards. Last season he was in charge when Bournemouth beat us 1-0 in December.

Did you know? - Paul Miller, who won the FA Cup with Spurs in 1981 and 1982 was relegated to the third tier in 1990 as part of a Bournemouth side managed by future Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

P.S. Many congratulations to Djed Spence, after his first call up to the England senior international squad!
