Former University of Texas star linebacker and Baltimore Ravens second-round pick Sergio Kindle has been diagnosed with cancer, according to a report from The Dallas Morning News.
The 37-year-old Kindle had been experiencing stomach pains for a few months, leading him to get a CT scan, according to the report.
The scan revealed that he has early stage colon cancer.
Sergio Kindle starred at Texas, before being drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately for Kindle, he lasted only three years in the NFL, before being waived. However, he did win a Super Bowl during the 2012 season with Baltimore.
Kindle spoke with The Dallas Morning News about his cancer diagnosis, as well as his father, Johnny Walker, dying from cancer.
“The scariest part is finding out that it was cancer, because the last image I have is seeing it take my father away and seeing him deteriorate from it,” Sergio Kindle said. “He was the strongest man I know.”
The Dallas Morning News also spoke with Hillcrest head football coach Adrian Madise about Kindle’s diagnosis.
“It’s tough,” he said. “God gives his strongest people the biggest tests. It’s a blessing that he found out when he did. A lot of people find out too late. It’s something that we believe he is going to be able to pull through."
While Kindle is upset, he is also staying positive. He is going to have to give up red meat and processed foods, according to The Dallas Morning News, but he is also hopeful that with surgery, the cancer will be removed.
“They haven’t had anything negative to say when it comes to that, based on it being so early, and my youth and my fitness level,” Kindle said. “They think that I won’t need radiation or chemo. [The doctor] said there is a great chance it won’t come back, but it’s cancer, so you can’t just say 0%."
Sergio Kindle appeared in 46 games and made 25 starts during his Texas career. He earned All-American honors as a senior in 2009 after finishing with 70 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.
Kindle dealt with injuries during his NFL career and was unable to make much of an impact during his three seasons in the National Football League with the Ravens.
