Darnell Furlong’s subtle dig at former club West Brom after joining Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town and West Brom will be looking to achieve promotion back to the Premier League this season.

The Tractor Boys were relegated last season from the top flight, with Kieran McKenna’s side suffering a long, tough period, as they have only won one in the last 22 fixtures.

West Brom have made a good start to the campaign as they look to make a push for promotion under Ryan Mason, having not been in the top flight since 2021.

Ipswich Town signed Darnell Furlong from West Brom recently, making him the fourth signing the Tractor Boys have made from the Baggies in the last two seasons, and now the full-back has made his feelings clear on his move to the East Anglian side.

Darnell Furlong is excited by Ipswich Town’s ‘ambition’

The new Ipswich Town signing has opened up about why he has decided to leave West Brom, believing the ambition of Kieran McKenna’s side was too attractive to reject.

This may be viewed as a subtle dig towards West Brom and his belief that they will not achieve promotion this season under Mason.

He told TownTV: “I’ve been promoted from the Championship before with West Brom, and it was one of the greatest times of my life.

“It would be really nice to be able to do that again.

“Being here is a great privilege. I’ve had a look around, and I’m just really excited. I was really intrigued by the ambition of the club; that’s the main thing that has made me want to come here. I’m just looking forward to getting going.

“I’d been at my previous club a long time, and you get comfortable there, your routine and everything, but I’m looking forward to a new challenge and kicking on.

“Ipswich are sending a real signal of intent, and to be part of that is really nice.”

Furlong’s reunion with former West Brom teammates

The latest Ipswich Town signing has spoken about his joy at reuniting with his former teammates, with the Tractor Boys signing four players from West Brom in the last two seasons.

Furlong spoke about the previous five players he has played with through his career, Alex Palmer, Dara O’Shea, Cedric Kipre, Conor Townsend and David Button – now they are at Ipswich – and addressed what he would bring to the club.

He said: “There’s an entire back five that I’ve played with already! They’re great people, so that will help me settle in. It’s nice to be linking up with them again.”

“Someone who gives everything. I’m experienced in the league now, which I think I use to my benefit. However, I can help the team I will.”
