Manchester United youngster Gabriele Biancheri has secured his first call-up to the Wales Under-21s squad.

The striker, 18, has been named in head coach Matty Jones' 23-man squad for his side's upcoming 2027 European Championship qualifier against Denmark in just over a week's time. The Wales youngsters will welcome the Danes to Newport County's Rodney Parade on Monday, September 8.

Jones' decision marks another landmark in Biancheri's young career. The United ace, who has featured in both of the Reds' Under-21s opening two Premier League 2 outings this season, is deemed as one of the most exciting talents within the club's academy.

However, he is eligible to play for both Wales and Canada at international level and spent time training with the latter's senior squad earlier in the summer.

However, Jones is hopeful Biancheri will commit his international future to Wales, explaining: "It's been a fascinating journey [for him]. He's come through the system with us.

"What we try to do with the younger age group players is encourage them to have those experiences when they're younger to help them make their decisions. We always feel fully confident of what we create in all age groups in terms of our environment and what it feels like, and should feel like, to represent our country.

"It was something he felt he needed to explore and all we could do was support him. The difficulty is that the scrutiny is a lot more in the older age groups.

"I've had two calls with him since he's returned that were positive. 'It just wasn't Wales' was quite a nice line for him to give us to know that we'd have the confidence to select him back into our environment, so we have brought him back in and he's itching to go."

Biancheri, who scored 25 goals for United's Under-18s and Under-21s last season, could be allowed to leave Old Trafford on loan ahead of the transfer window closing on Monday evening.

Gabriele Biancheri enjoyed a prolific campaign last season.

He admitted in June that he was open to going out on loan this season, telling The Athletic: "I don't really know the plan for next season. I just take everything as it comes.

"If that's going on loan and learning and getting experience playing men's football, I'll take it.

"If that's getting a chance with the first-team and playing Under-21s and earning my shot, that's what I'll do."
