"Sometimes I want to quit" - Amorim addresses shock post-Grimsby comments

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted that he 'sometimes wants to quit and sometimes wants to be at the club for 20 years', with the Portuguese addressing his comments following the shock defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.

Amorim sent a cryptic message following his side's penalty-shootout defeat to Grimsby on Wednesday night, with the Portuguese suggesting that he could walk away from his job following Saturday's Premier League game with Burnley.

As expected, the 40-year-old was quizzed on his comments during his press conference on Friday to preview the must-win league fixture against Burnley.

Amorim admitted that sometimes emotions get the better of him, but he has vowed to "improve on that".

"Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don't want to be with them. So, again, I need to improve on that," he told reporters.

Amorim: 'My focus is now on Burnley clash'

"In that moment, I was really upset and really disappointed because I thought we had a really good pre-season. We were being consistent in the way we played. Now it's a new game and I am focused on the game.

"I need to live this day-by-day. I am understanding that. If you are in one way, if you have this kind of behaviour, you have to understand that sometimes you have good things and the other side of the coin. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years.

"I think that is the hardest part of the defeat; sometimes it is not the result, it is the way we lost that game or drew that game. It is the small things: fighting for the ball, running."

Man United were two goals behind against Grimsby before fighting back to level the scores at 2-2 courtesy of a last-gasp equaliser from Harry Maguire, but the Red Devils lost 12-11 on penalties.

Will Amorim leave Man United after the Burnley match?

Football, for all of the drama that surrounds it, is a results business.

A win and a positive performance against Burnley would change the picture entirely, as Man United would suddenly be entering the September international break with four points from three Premier League matches.

However, a defeat, or even a draw, would leave Amorim's job hanging by a thread.

Amorim is expected to hold showdown talks with Man United chiefs after the Burnley match, but he clearly believes that was too emotional following the Grimsby match, and there was no talk of an exit during his press conference.

For now, the Portuguese is fully focused on what will be one of his biggest games since arriving at Old Trafford, and Burnley will be desperate to pile more misery on the 20-time English champions.
