Ruben Amorim explains his comments after Man Utd vs Grimsby,'Sometimes I want to quit...'

Manchester United and Ruben Amorim will know victory is a necessity this weekend in the Premier League against Burnley.

For Ruben Amorim, there is simply no other result that will suffice given the embarrassment Manchester United suffered mid-week against Grimsby.

United losing to Grimsby on penalties is inexcusable, and following the game on Wednesday night, Amorim’s words and demeanour were different from ever before in his time as head coach.

Amorim revealed his shock at United’s players being outperformed, seeming to suggest that he had no explanation other than the players being lost.

“I know that the best team won. The only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players,” Amorim said. “I think the team and the players spoke really loudly today. We lost. The best team won.

It is a defeat hard to come back from for most, but despite it being a low point in club history, many fans remain in support of the Portuguese head coach, with the belief he will get it right eventually.

Now, Amorim has spoken to the press ahead of facing Burnley with an explanation for his comments.

After Amorim’s comments, there was plenty of speculation around what he meant by his words. Some United fans thought Amorim was hinting at walking away from the club.

However, on Friday afternoon, Amorim spoke to the press and revealed that his frustrations got the best of him and he let his emotions show during the interview.

“I know that when I say these things, to be really honest, every time we have one defeat like that, I’m going to be like that”, Amorim explained.

“Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don’t want to be with them. So, again, I need to improve on that!”

This response to his comments, which led to plenty of speculation over the past few days, won’t please a lot of fans, as it certainly isn’t excusable.

Amorim at 40 should be able to settle his nerves and give a balanced verdict in post-game interviews. Comments like he made should remain in-house, as saying this in the media will only rub off on players.

Ruben Amorim needs to win big at Old Trafford on Saturday

It is becoming clear that United are in for the long haul with Amorim, willing to give the young coach time as he grows with the team, but he cannot go into September without a win.

On Saturday, Burnley comes to Old Trafford, and United must make an example of Scott Parker’s side by scoring at least three and settling the growing noise around the club ahead of the international break.

United’s next two games after Burnley are against Manchester City and Chelsea, and so the momentum of a big win this weekend is absolutely needed.

Amorim is safe for now, but for his own good, three points and lots of goals this weekend are a necessary outcome.
