Maresca's man? Chelsea'include 21-year-old PL star'on list of long-term targets

Chelsea have reportedly added Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton to a list of long-term transfer targets.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed a stellar period in the Premier League to date following his £21m move from Blackburn Rovers in February 2024.

So much so, Wharton has been linked with a host of world-class clubs in recent times, including 13-time European champions Real Madrid.

Due to injuries, the engine room enforcer played just 20 Premier League matches last season for the Eagles under the tutelage of Oliver Glasner.

Despite disappointment in the top flight, Palace's FA Cup glory provided a perfect distraction, with Wharton helping the capital club to their first-ever major honour.

Chelsea add Crystal Palace star Wharton to targets list?

According to transfer specialist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea are plotting the capture of Crystal Palace youngster Wharton in the future.

The report claims that the Blues have added the 21-year-old to a list of potential long-term targets for the World Champions.

It is understood that bringing Wharton to Stamford Bridge before Monday's 7pm deadline would be difficult for Enzo Maresca's men.

As a result, Chelsea are currently planning to swoop for the midfielder at a later date, potentially rivalling the likes of Real Madrid for his signature.

Understandably, Palace are keen to retain the services of one-time England international Wharton for at least another season.

Palace plan in motion

After losing star man Eberechi Eze to Arsenal last week, Crystal Palace are not in the mood to see any more of their key players depart.

Despite his limited appearances last season, Wharton still made a significant impact for the Eagles as they lifted the FA Cup.

Looking to record their maiden domestic victory of the season following back-to-back draws, Palace travel to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
