Ruben Amorim has admitted he sometimes “wants to quit” Manchester United and “hates my players” as the under-pressure boss opened up on his emotional character.

But the United boss vowed not to change following his impassioned post-match comments in the wake of United's EFL Cup humiliation at Grimsby.

Amorim said his players “spoke loudly about what they want” in the immediate aftermath of United's penalty shoot-out defeat to their League Two opponents.

The United boss hinted that his players were not buying into his ideas, but today Amorim rowed back on those remarks and said he will continue to let his heart rule his head.

“Guys, to be really honest with you, every time that we have or have in the future one defeat like that, I'm going to be like that,” said Amorim.

“I'm going to say that sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players. I think I cannot.

“This is my way of doing things and I'm going to be like that. And I felt that at that moment I was so frustrated and annoyed.

“And I know, again, that you have a lot of experienced people talking about the way I should perform with the media, to be more constant, to be more calm. I'm not going to be like that.

Ruben Amorim, Manager of Manchester United, looks dejected after his team concede during the Carabao Cup Second Round match between Grimsby Town and Manchester United at Blundell Park on August 27, 2025 in Grimsby, England.

“So I'm trying to accept that and I'm going to be who I am. That's why I have the passion that I have. At that moment I was really upset and really disappointed, because I felt that we had a very good pre-season, we were playing better, we were being consistent in the way we played. We played badly for 30 minutes against Fulham.

“With that kind of performance, I was really disappointed with everything. But now it's a new game and I'm focused on the next one. I'm just focused on this game and I need to live this day by day. I understand that. And I'm going to be like that all the time. So prepare yourself.

“If you are in one way, if you have this kind of behaviour, you have to understand that you have things that are good on that type of behaviour, that you have the other side of the coin.

“So I understand that. And again, sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don't want to be with them. So, again, I need to improve on that. It's going to be hard.”

Amorim insisted he wants Kobbie Mainoo to stay, after the United and England midfielder asked to leave on loan because of a lack of playing time.

“I want Kobbie to stay,” said Amorim. “He needs to fight for his place and we need Kobe. So that is not going to change.

“The rest [Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho, Tyrrell Malacia] I don't know how it's going to finish. I understand that the players that are not playing at this moment are disappointed.

“But everyone will have the same opportunity to play. You have to fight during the week.”
