Marseille make late move to sign Arsenal player

Olympique Marseille are working on a deal to sign Oleksandr Zinchenko in a permanent transfer from Arsenal, though obstacles to the transfer still remain.

David Ornstein reports for The Athletic that Ligue 1 club Marseille are working on a deal to sign Oleksandr Zinchenko from Arsenal, showing an interest in a permanent transfer.

Talks are ongoing, but a significant issue is Zinchenko’s salary. If a deal is to go ahead, Zinchenko’s wages are a big obstacle to overcome.

Zinchenko would be Marseille’s second Arsenal-linked signing of the summer, with the club already having brought in former Gunner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Al-Qadsiah.

With the transfer deadline on September 1st now just days away, things should start to speed up in Zinchenko’s case.

The left-back has been linked with a number of clubs throughout the window, including Fenerbahce, FC Porto, Fulham, and Real Betis, but none of those deals ever progressed beyond the initial media reports. There were no reliable reports of bids or agreements in any of the four cases.

As it stands, not much is different with Marseille. But it seems Marseille are more likely than any of the others to actually complete a deal this summer.

Zinchenko played for Arsenal in pre-season, but he was subsequently left out of the matchday squad as the team took on Manchester United and Leeds United in competitive fixtures.

The Gunners have a surplus of players at the moment, so somebody had to be excluded. With Zinchenko behind Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly at left-back, it’s no surprise he lost his spot on the bench.

Writing in his autobiography recently, Zinchenko said of his future “let’s see what time will bring” adding “I still want to play football”.
