Chelsea legend Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Fenerbahce after he failed to secure them a place in the League phase of the UEFÀ Champions League. The Portuguese tactician was appointed by the Istanbul-based side just over a year ago and leaves the club without any silverware to his name on the Bosphorus.
Mourinho managed the side in 62 games, averaging 2.02 points per game, his highest since his stint with Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013. Fenerbhace announced the Portuguese tactician’s departure via a post on X, saying:
“Our Professional Football First Team’s technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us. We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.”
What former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had said about his future
Chelsea legend Jose Mourinho had mused about his future in the sport before his time with Fenerbahce came to an end. The tactician, previously known as “The Special One,” has fallen from grace in recent years but remains one of the most successful figures in European club football history.
In an interview with Goal, the Portuguese tactician discussed the possibility of returning to England with a smaller team, saying:
“The best thing I have to do is when I leave Fener is that I go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competition. So, a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I’m ready to go.”
Mourinho has also left the door open to managing a national team, telling Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport:
“Yes. I want to play a European Championship or a World Cup – to unite a country around its national team in the same way I have managed so many times with clubs and fans. I want to do it for football, for what this sport represents. It will be incredible.”
Mourinho will remain fondly remembered at his former clubs, with his debut EPL title won with Chelsea and his subsequent success with the club and on the continent unlikely to be forgotten anytime soon.
