Tottenham 'make approach' to sign 2x PL winner before transfer deadline

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an approach to sign Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji before the end of the window.

Spurs have reportedly reached an agreement to sign RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons, who was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea, and they are now looking to add a new defender to their ranks.

The north London club signed Kevin Danso on a permanent deal to bolster their defensive ranks, and they were further boosted after Cristian Romero decided to stay put despite being linked with a move away from the club.

While Ben Davies and Archie Gray can play as centre-backs, it appears that Spurs are still looking to sign one more experienced defender, with Radu Dragusin not expected to return before the end of the year due to a cruciate ligament tear.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have made an approach to sign Akanji, who could be allowed to leave the club before the September 1 deadline.

The 30-year-old is one of the three names shortlisted by Spurs, but they are likely to face competition from Serie A giants AC Milan, who are ready to pay £15m for his services.

Turkish club Galatasaray are also linked with a move for the two-time Premier League champions, while Crystal Palace have reportedly submitted a bid to bring him to Selhurst Park.

The former Borussia Dortmund defender is yet to accept the proposal from the Turkish giants, but he is definitely considering his future ahead of the transfer deadline.

Since moving to Etihad Stadium from Dortmund in the summer of 2022, Akanji has made 136 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The former FC Basel defender has won seven trophies under Pep Guardiola, and he was a member of the side that celebrated the historic treble in the 2022-23 season.

The Switzerland international was left out of the matchday squad for last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League, and he looks certain to be heading for the exit door.

A move to San Siro can be tempting for Akanji, but he could prefer a move to Spurs, who can offer him Champions League football this season.
