Why Liverpool target Guehi ‘has to stay’ at Crystal Palace beyond transfer deadline

Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner has insisted that Liverpool target Marc Guehi ‘has to stay’ at Selhurst Park beyond next Monday’s transfer deadline.

The 25-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with the Eagles and he has been linked with a move away throughout this summer, but a transfer is yet to materialise.

Premier League champions Liverpool are reportedly**ready to spend over £30m** to sign Guehi, but Palace are thought to value their star defender in excess of £40m.

The Reds are light in the centre-back department after allowing Jarell Quansah to join Bayer Leverkusen, while injury-prone Joe Gomez is not considered a first-team regular, leaving Arne Slot with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as his main central defensive options.

Guehi started as captain as the Eagles played out a 0-0 draw with Fredrikstad in the second leg of their Conference League playoff tie on Thursday, progressing to the League Phase via a 1-0 aggregate scoreline.

The England international, who has also been**called up to Thomas Tuchel’s latest squad**, is available to play for Palace in Sunday’s Premier League clash away against Aston Villa, and Glasner is determined to keep hold of the centre-back.

Glasner determined to keep Liverpool-linked Guehi beyond transfer deadline

Discussing the future of Guehi at a press conference on Friday, Glasner said that there is not enough time to find a ready-made replacement for Guehi, adding that the Eagles star remains committed to the club.

"From my side, he has to [still be a Crystal Palace player] because it's not possible at the moment to find a Marc Guehi replacement who can play straight in the Premier League, being a starter, being consistent," Glasner told reporters.

"When we see our foundation of success in the last few months, it's our defence... Marc is a crucial part. Getting the right replacement in now is almost impossible.

"He shows in every game that he's focused. If Marc had said 'I want to leave Crystal Palace', it would already have happened weeks ago.

"Marc is fully committed to the team, he shows it every third day at the moment... it is my point of view that we need to keep Marc."

Glasner hopeful of more new signings after Pino arrival

Glasner has already seen star playmaker Eberechi Eze join Arsenal for a reported £67.5m, but Palace have since replaced him with the £26m signing of highly-rated attacker Yeremy Pino from Villarreal.

Pino is one of only three new signings made by the Eagles so far this summer, and Glasner is disappointed that the club did not add more players to his squad before the start of the new season.

Nevertheless, the Austrian boss is confident that Palace will bring in more fresh faces before the transfer deadline.

"Frustration is maybe the wrong word. We had a meeting in March and we were talking about the strategy for the summer,” said Glasner.

"We knew that Eberechi could leave the club so at the beginning, it was not in our hands but we knew we had to be prepared. We knew the situation about Marc and we had to be prepared.

"We wanted to bring the players in at the beginning of pre-season, to be in a good position of negotiating and to integrate the players.

"Now having to integrate four or five players delays being successful. This is the missed opportunities to bring in the players early enough. Usually when you are busy at the end, you missed something at the beginning. Everywhere is the same.

"We know we have to sign a few players. It's a responsibility of Crystal Palace to be competitive in the Premier League, the Conference League and the cup competitions again. I'm still confident we'll get the right players in."

Palace have been linked with a number of players before the deadline, including Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji and Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott.
