Everton have learnt the decision of Victor Lindelof after free transfer links.

Everton previously made a contract approach for Lindelof after his deal at Manchester United finished at the end of last season.

This has seen David Moyes showcase an interest in the Sweden international despite Jose Mourinho’s belief that Lindelof gets “bullied” too easily in the Premier League.

With that being said, there was hope that the 31-year-old would move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium before the end of the transfer window.

Now, the Toffees know where Lindelof sees his future as the L4 club looks ahead to the 1 September transfer deadline on Merseyside.

It is fair to say that the potential signing of the free agent defender has been given mixed reviews in recent months.

Victor Lindelof had a difficult season at Manchester United last season

This saw Ian Darke suggest that Lindelof would devalue the Everton squad, but that was based on a situation if Jarrad Branthwaite were to leave.

With the England international out injured, his exit is off the table this summer, but that hasn’t stopped an effort to land the Swede.

Despite this, it now looks unlikely that the former Benfica man is going to remain in the Premier League for the upcoming season.

This comes after Corriere Fiorentino on 29 August, that Fiorentina has won the race to sign Lindelof after giving his preference to them instead of Everton.

Former Manchester United teammate David De Gea, now with La Viola, has “bombarded” the centre-half with calls to convince him of a Florence move.

Everton must target new centre-back

There is no getting away from the fact that a new defender would be well-received at the Hill Dickinson, given the current frailties of the squad.

With Jake O’Brien playing at full-back and Michael Keane alongside James Tarkowski, there is a lack of depth remaining in the squad.

This has seen Elijah Campbell become the second choice and bench option under Moyes so far this campaign.

With that being said, another defensive injury could be catastrophic and even with Lindelof being an unpopular option, he would have still represented a useful asset.

As a result, now the Toffees need to quickly assess new targets and bring a new defensive star in before the 1 September deadline.
