Liverpool 'receive' transfer boost as Palace agree £23m deal for Guehi replacement

Liverpool have reportedly received a major transfer boost in the race to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Reds have spent over £300m in the summer transfer window, but Arne Slot is still looking to add one defender and an attacker before the transfer deadline.

Signing an experienced defender is a priority for the Premier League champions after they sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are first-choice defenders for Slot, while Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leonni are backup options.

Konate has entered the final year of his contract at Anfield, and it is unclear whether he will sign a new deal. Gomez has struggled with injuries, while Leonni is seen as a player for the future, which is why the Reds are keen to land Guehi.

Oliver Glasner has made it clear that the 25-year-old defender has to remain at the club past Monday's deadline.

However, according to a report from BBC Sport, the Reds have received encouragement that the Eagles are prepared to sell the England defender, and they are working on signing at least two new centre-backs.

The former Chelsea defender has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and Palace do not want to lose him for free next summer.

The Eagles value him at around £40m, but Liverpool are reportedly willing to offer around £30m to get the deal done.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Eagles have reached an agreement to sign French centre-back Jaydee Canvot.

It has been reported that Palace have paid around £23m to sign the Toulouse defender, who is viewed as a long-term replacement for Guehi.

Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande has been reportedly linked with a move to Selhurst Park, but they have been unable to afford him.

Palace have also submitted a bid for Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji, but they face strong competition from Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan to sign the Switzerland international.
