Simons - who had been linked with a move to Chelsea - was officially unveiled as a Tottenham player on Friday evening after a £51million deal was struck with RB Leipzig.

The Dutchman’s arrival means Spurs have completed their search for an creative midfielder who operates behind the centre-forward.

Amid long-term injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, the north London outfit were unsuccessful in their attempts to sign Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, while Nico Paz and Morgan Rogers were not viewed as realistic targets for this window.

However, Thomas Frank has bolstered his midfield options with the signing of Simons and the club have shown an enormous amount of faith in the 22-year-old with the shirt number decision.

It has been confirmed that Simons will wear the No7 shirt for Spurs. This particular squad number was synonymous with former captain and legend Heung-min Son for a decade prior to his move to LAFC.

Previous owners of the shirt number for Tottenham in the Premier League era include Aaron Lennon, Simon Davies, Paul Stalteri, Ruel Fox and Darren Anderton.

Simons has worn No7 for the Netherlands national team over the past year, most notably at Euro 2024 when he scored against England in a semi-final defeat.

He also wore No7 during a successful loan spell with PSV Eindhoven during the 2022-23 season before taking on the No10 shirt at RB Leipzig having initially wore No20.
