Leading Off: Iowa colleges place 50 players on NFL rosters

Former Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Drake players make NFL rosters

The four biggest college football programs in the state will have 50 players on NFL rosters when the season begins.

Of state universities, Iowa has the most players on NFL rosters with 29. Among them are established stars like George Kittle with the San Francisco 49ers, T.J. Hockenson of the Minnesota Vikings and Jack Campbell of the Detroit Lions.

Seventeen former Cyclones are on NFL rosters. Brock Purdy of the 49ers, New York Jets' wideout Allen Lazard and Houston Texans’ wide receivers Jayden Higgins are among the notable names.

Northern Iowa has four former players in the NFL – Khristian Boyd (New Orleans Saints), Spencer Brown (Buffalo Bills), Elijah Campbell (Miami Dolphins) and Trevor Penning (New Orleans Saints).

Drake has one player currently in the NFL in Seattle Seahawks’ tight end Eric Saubert.

UNI falls at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – UNI suffered a 1-0 non-conference loss at St. Thomas Thursday afternoon.

The Tommies scored the game’s lone goal four minutes into the second half.

UNI had opportunities to equalize in the second half, amassing seven shots on goal after the intermission.

Kennedy Bunterbach took the loss for the Panthers (1-2-1).

UNI returns home Sunday to host Viterbo on Senior Day. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the UNI Soccer Field.

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY

UNI opens season at Iowa State

AMES – The UNI cross country team opened the season at the Cyclone Preview at the Iowa State University Cross Country Course.

Sophomore Colin Lillie led the way for Panther men in the six-kilometer race with a career best time of 18:33 to finish in 14th place overall. Micah Rees followed in 16th place with a career best time of 18:38. In his collegiate debut, Ethan Olds placed 20th with a time of 18:58, followed closely by Drew Dombrosky in 23rd with a new career best time of 19:03.

Senior Amelia Hill led the way for the Panther women in the five-kilometer race, finishing ninth with a time of 17:35, the seventh fastest 5K time in program history. Leah Klapatauskas followed closely behind, finishing tenth with a career best time of 17:45, while Meghan Wheatley also clocked with a time of 17:45 to take 11th.

Kaylee Woolery finished 15th with a career best time of 18:17, followed by Sarah Feddersen finishing 16th in 18:25.

The Panthers run next Friday at the Redbird Invite in Normal, Illinois.
