‘Exactly that…’Micah Richards and Gary Lineker feel same way about eye-catching Man Utd and Ruben Amorim comparison

Gary Lineker and Micah Richards were on the same wavelength over an interesting comparison that has been made involving Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim is already feeling the heat early into the 2025-26 season at Old Trafford after the Red Devils’ underwhelming start to the new campaign.

The 40-year-old United manager is waiting for the Red Devils to pick up their first win across all competitions after two defeats and a draw in the first three matches.

United lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener before the Red Devils picked up their first point in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Fulham.

Following United’s result against Fulham at Craven Cottage last weekend, the Red Devils kicked off their Carabao Cup campaign in the second round on Wednesday.

However, the Premier League club’s run in the 2025-26 Carabao Cup competition was short-lived, with United suffering a humiliating defeat to Grimsby Town.

Gary Lineker explains to Micah Richards how Man Utd and Ruben Amorim can be measured in one way

Ruben Amorim’s future at Old Trafford has even been plunged into doubt after Manchester United’s penalty shootout loss to Grimsby Town on Wednesday evening.

League Two side Grimsby caused a stunning upset at Blundell Park in the second-round Carabao Cup tie and United were toothless in the first half with their display.

Gary Lineker argued that the poor start to the season under United manager Amorim shows where Tottenham have done the complete opposite under Thomas Frank.

“I also saw a thing that said, well, you know, everyone’s saying, well, he needs to sort his own way out,” he said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“He’s come into this team and he needs time. And yeah, absolutely agree with that. But someone said, compare that to Thomas Frank. He’s needed three games.

“You know, brilliant performance against PSG and then six points out of two in the first two matches.

“But I think even though they finished in a similar league position last season, I would say he [Frank] inherited a much better squad, perhaps for the way he plays than the way that Amorim plays.

“Although I would also say in Thomas Frank’s favour, that Thomas has more than one way of playing and Amorim needs to show that he doesn’t have just one way of playing.”

Micah Richards’ reaction to Gary Lineker’s comparison between Tottenham boss Thomas Frank and Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim

Thomas Frank left Brentford at the end of the 2024-25 Premier League campaign and replaced Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham manager in the summer.

Tottenham lost to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the Super Cup earlier this month, but Spurs have made a strong start to the Premier League season.

Spurs defeated Burnley 3-0 in their Premier League opener at home before Frank’s men sealed a sensational 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad last weekend.

Micah Richards made his feelings perfectly clear that he agreed with The Rest Is Football co-host Lineker over the adaptability Frank has shown compared to Amorim.

Responding to Lineker, Richards said: “Exactly that. Adaptable.

“He’s played a five at the back. He’s played a four, he’s played with a three.

“So, yeah, I think Amorim has stuck to his principles, which I think has hindered the team a little bit.”

Lineker then added: “Yeah, and we’ll see what happens.”

Tottenham are second in the Premier League and are level with league leaders and rivals Arsenal, while United languish in 16th place in the table after two matches.
