RB Leipzig are reportedly set to ramp up its interest in Liverpool's Harvey Elliott, after Tottenham Hotspur successfully secured the signing of Xavi Simons. Although Chelsea has been heavily linked with a summer move for 22-year-old Simons, they have now missed out to their Premier League rivals in the race for his signature.

Since initially joining Leipzig on loan in 2023 and securing a permanent transfer this January, Simons has proven himself as a rising star, contributing to 46 goals in 78 appearances across all competitions.

Sky Sports reports Spurs are set to pay the German side just over £51 million for Simons. Elliott is said to be Leipzig's top choice to replace him, although the ECHO understands Liverpool will resist any late offers for the playmaker this summer.

A move to RB Leipzig, however, would reunite Elliott with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who is now Red Bull's head of global football. After leaving Liverpool last summer, Klopp admitted his only regret from his final season was not giving Elliott more game time, stating: "But if I regret one thing a little bit, it's that Harvey didn't play often enough maybe.

"Because in a very important, intense period – January, a lot of injuries - he played really good. He was probably our best player, right wing, right midfield, all these kinds of things."

Elliott, a devoted Liverpool supporter since childhood, has been reluctant to depart the club and the ECHO understands that Liverpool feel his true value far exceeds the current market rate following players such as Matheus Fernandes (to West Ham United) and Omari Hutchinson (to Nottingham Forest) moving for figures of between £38m and £42m in recent days.

Nevertheless, he has previously acknowledged that he may need to seek pastures new for his career development, having only featured from the start in six fixtures across all competitions during the previous campaign.

"It's just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about because I'm coming into an age now where I'm 22, I'm going to be 23 next season," Elliott declared when asked about his future during the U21 Euros.

"I don't really want to be wasting years of my career because it's a short career. You don't know what's going to happen. I need to reflect. I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing, and how can I improve as a player, because that's the most important thing.

"I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make, and I just need to see what happens. Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team.

"I support them as well. But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career. After my injury, I think it was always going to be hard, but I'd hoped I would have got some more opportunities, but football is football."
