Aston Villa face injury problems in bid to get campaign up and running

A club that missed out on Champions League football by goal difference alone last term have yet to fire this season, drawing their opening game with Newcastle before last week’s 1-0 loss at Brentford.

“Our start this season has been poor,” Emery said. “One point from six, and of course, even being unbeaten at home, we are again remembering how we lost last year, points at home, drawing a lot of matches in a row.”

The slow start on the pitch has added to frustrations off it as Villa have struggled to strengthen in the transfer market.

Striker Evann Guessand and young defender Yasin Ozcan are the only significant arrivals so far, while the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey have left without replacements being brought in.

“We are busy and we are involved in it the last days, because we have to try to improve our squad,” Emery said. “We have enough players to get a good result with those players and we have other young players, they are training with us every day, and I think they will be, in their development, important players for the future of Aston Villa.

“We need to try and (replace) some players, they left, like Ramsey and Leon Bailey. We need now to try to join some players in our squad, helping us with their performance they can give us, so quick.”

Aston Villa will welcome Ezri Konsa back from suspension after he was sent off against Newcastle on the opening day

Though they will welcome Ezri Konsa back to the defence following suspension, Villa are also enduring somewhat of an injury crisis in midfield.

Boubacar Kamara limped off with a hamstring problem just 16 minutes into the defeat in west London, while midfield partner Amadou Onana has been left out of the Belgium squad for next week's World Cup qualifiers because of his own  problem.

And Emery is assessing the options to him ahead of Sunday night's clash at Villa Park.

“We will see tomorrow, I don’t want to anticipate,” said the Spaniard at Friday afternoon’s pre-match press conference. “We have some players injured but I will want to train tomorrow and (see) how we can use the players in the squad for Sunday.

“Until tomorrow, the last training session, I don’t want to say anything.”
