The biggest story in sports from this past week actually had nothing to do with sports. It was the engagement between Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and the biggest pop star in the world, Taylor Swift, whose love story has been at the forefront of the NFL landscape since it was first announced they were dating.
The couple had been dating for 2 years when they announced the massive news via social media this past Tuesday, and the revelation naturally sent shockwaves through the media landscape.
For the Huskers, it also presented the opportunity to poke a bit of fun at Kelce after they beat his alma mater, the Cincinnati Bearcats, on Thursday night in a now-deleted tweet.
The Nebraska social media team took one of the photos the couple used to announce their engagement and photoshopped team mascot Herbie Husker over Kelce, then tweeted it out on their official X account with the caption “change of plans.”
The post was quickly deleted, but some crafty X users wisely screenshotted the meme before it could be deleted, and as such, it was able to live on.
It’s clear that whoever is in charge of Nebraska’s social media accounts wanted to avoid any potential bad blood with Swift and her fanbase, but the damage was already done.
