It’s not just that the team has lost six captains. The team outright released the majority of them. Here’s how each player departed New England in recent months.
C David Andrews- Cut during the offseason, later retired.
QB Jacoby Brissett- Contract expired, left in free agency.
DE Deatrich Wise Jr.- Contract expired, left in free agency.
LB Ja’Whaun Bentley- Cut in March.
LS Joe Cardona- Cut in April.
S Jabrill Peppers- Cut on Friday.
Technically, the Patriots have not lost every one of their captains from last season. After Peppers was suspended, safetyKyle Dugger was elevated to a captain. However, even Dugger’s status on the roster has been a sure thing as the safety was named in trade rumors throughout the summer.
Additionally, after a season-ending injury to Bentley, tight end Hunter Henry was also named a captain in October.
