Tottenham plot raid on Manchester City for £40 million defender, submit enquiry

Tottenham have reportedly held preliminary talks to explore a move for Manchester City defender Nathan Ake before the transfer window closes.

According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham are exploring late opportunities in the transfer market as they have held preliminary talks for defender Nathan Ake. The Dutchman is into the final two years of his deal at Manchester City, and Thomas Frank views him as a good addition to improve the left-hand side of his defence.

Tottenham are expected to be one of the busier clubs in the Premier League around the transfer window deadline. Thomas Frank is open to new faces before the window slams shut, as there are some areas he needs to address.

The search for an attacking midfielder might have ended with Xavi Simons joining Spurs from RB Leipzig, although they might still angle a move for a new winger in the next days. Frank also remains keen to add a defensive name to the squad, particularly for the left-hand side.

They had been interested in Piero Hincapie, although Arsenal are closing in on the Ecuadorian defender ahead of the weekend. The idea of the Bayer Leverkusen star shows what Frank had wanted from the new defender, as he seeks someone who could compete for a central slot as well as play at left-back.

Nathan Ake is a name that is doing the rounds with regards to Tottenham, as the North Londoners have reportedly held preliminary talks for the Dutchman. Having signed for Manchester City in a £40 million deal from Bournemouth back in 2020, the experienced defender has entered the final two years of his deal at the Etihad, and could be seen as a late opportunity by Spurs.

Nathan Ake to leave Manchester City?

Ake has had fitness-related issues over the last season, and he is not an automatic starter under Pep Guardiola anymore. Once Josko Gvardiola returns, the Croat will automatically start in central defence, probably alongside Ruben Dias, while summer arrival Rayan Ait-Nouri is pencilled in for the left-back slot. The £40 million defender may find it difficult to cement a regular place, and could potentially consider a late exit.

He does fit into Frank’s thinking of the profile the Spurs boss seeks, as Nathan Ake can challenge Micky van de Ven for a spot at the heart of the defence as well as Destiny Udogie at left-back. Moreover, with Champions League football set to make a return to Tottenham, Frank would want the experience that Ake brings, as there could be a possibility of a late move for the versatile Manchester City defender.
