Former Michigan, Browns star released by Patriots

The New England Patriots have released safety and former team captain Jabrill Peppers, according to reports.

Peppers, 29, is entering his ninth NFL season. He has $4.32 million guaranteed remaining on his contract for this season, according to ESPN.

The former University of Michigan star spent the past three seasons with the Pats, recording 178 tackles, 10 pass deflections, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one sack in 38 games played.

Peppers was named a Patriots team captain prior to the 2024 NFL season, but only played in six games as he was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list after he was charged with assault, strangulation and drug possession in November 2024. He was later acquitted of all charges.

Prior to his time in New England, Peppers played three seasons for the New York Giants from 2019-21 and two seasons for the Cleveland Browns, which drafted him in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Peppers was traded by the Browns to the Giants as part of the Odell Beckham Jr. trade that brought the Pro Bowl wide receiver to Cleveland. In eight NFL seasons, Peppers has 511 tackles, 35 pass deflections, seven interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles and 5.5 sacks in 99 games played.

“Peppers was one of the most intriguing prospects in his draft class in 2017 for what he could do on offense, defense and special teams,” said Andrew Gillis, Ohio State Buckeyes reporter for cleveland.com / The Plain Dealer. “A thorn in the side of Ohio State, the former Michigan Wolverine was one of the nation’s best during his time in Ann Arbor. It will be interesting to see where his football career goes from here.”

The NFL kicks off its 2025 season on Thursday, Sept. 4. New England plays its season opener on Sunday, Sept. 7, against the Las Vegas Raiders.
