Newcastle United's failed Australian experiment comes to a disappointing end

ยท 29 August 2025, 22:00

**Australian wunderkind Garang Kuol's time at Newcastle United has come to an end without ever getting close to realising his potential.**

Garang Kuol joined Newcastle back in 2023, arriving under the massive weight of a lot of hype and expectation, having impressed in his home country of Australia.

Playing for Central Coast Mariners, the teenager caught the attention of the football world, and it was Dan Ashworth who acted the quickest to snap up Kuol and bring him to Newcastle.

Before his move was officially completed, Kuol represented Australia at the World Cup, which also helped Newcastle in that it ensured he had enough points to be granted a British work permit.

Garang Kuol had no luck with loan moves after arriving at Newcastle

-------------------------------------------------------------------

The original plan was to loan Kuol out to a European team so he could build up his points that way, but after meeting the criteria, he was instead loaned to Hearts in Scotland, where he found game time very difficult to come by.

The following season, he was sent off to Holland to play for Eredivisie strugglers FC Volendam, which didn't produce much better results than the failed Hearts move.

Last season, an injury prevented him from securing a move away from Newcastle, but when the Aussie returned to fitnes,s he started to represent the Under 21s, even scoring a few goals. It started to look like we may finally see something come of his move.

We always wonder what might have been

-------------------------------------

Now, though, that will never happen as Newcastle United today confirmed that Garang Kuol, now 20, has joined Sparta Prague on a permanent basis for an undisclosed fee.

We'll never know if the horrendous loan moves hampered his development or whether it was simply a case of him looking so good because he played in the A-League.

We suspect the latter, but we hope the move to Prague will kick-start his career now. Good luck to Garang, and we'll always wonder what might have been.
