“Dr. J” is an iconic figure who bridged the ABA and NBA eras.

While his NBA career spanned 1976-1987, Erving’s full professional journey began in the ABA with the Virginia Squires (1971) and New York Nets (1973-1976), where he won two championships (1974, 1976) and three MVP awards.

Joining the Philadelphia 76ers after the ABA-NBA merger, Erving averaged 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists over 11 NBA seasons.

An 11-time NBA All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection, he led the Sixers to the 1983 championship, earning Finals MVP consideration alongside Moses Malone.

Famous for his athletic dunks, including the legendary “[rock the cradle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrlBgLdGKZM)” slam, Erving revolutionized above-the-rim play. He was also a premium bucket-getter, scoring over 30,000 combined ABA/NBA points.

Erving was named NBA MVP in 1981 and led the league in scoring that year (24.6 PPG).

His career accomplishments include 16 All-Star appearances across leagues, four ABA scoring titles, and induction into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

Erving’s flair and athleticism influenced Michael Jordan and others, as he was truly one of the league’s first high fliers who leaned into showmanship while also playing winning basketball.
